Basic thinking method of consultant's core competence

In the consulting career of more than 20 years, I often face completely unfamiliar industries. Brownstone must grasp the essence of the problem in a very short time and provide solutions.

How do senior consultants see through the essence of the project?

The answer is a necessary way of thinking for consultants.

So, what is the essential way of thinking?

Just remember eight words-make bold assumptions and be careful to verify.

First of all, bold assumptions

1, definition:

Definition is to make assumptions about the basic properties of the project.

This isn't what? What is this? What else could it be? Brown Stone often uses this description to define the nature of the project. This method is also suitable for defining various problems.

Defining problems from different dimensions will make people suddenly enlightened, open their minds and find essential solutions.

Of course, if there are many similar things or ideas, we can use the method of seeking common ground while reserving differences and the method of summarizing first and then abstracting. ...

2, root-seeking method:

Make assumptions about the root of the problem. John stuart mill, 5 Why questioning method, Structural Analysis, System Analysis ... These methods are disassembled and trained in detail in Brown Rock Consultant and 10 times better Coach.

3, causal chain:

A method of making assumptions about the underlying logic behind the phenomenon, that is, first summarizing and then abstracting to find out the causal relationship, is the consultant's underlying logical thinking. To find out the essential solution, we must first understand the causal relationship between things.

Second, check carefully.

Three verification methods: self-questioning, self-answering, experimental verification and counterexample.

1. Ask yourself: Is there a better hypothesis besides this? If another person assumed, what would he assume?

2. Experimental verification: What will happen if this is done? Sometimes it can be verified by pure logical reasoning, and sometimes it needs practice.

3. give a counterexample: under what circumstances does this assumption not hold?

The greatness of consultants is that they always believe that all ideas are hypotheses and need to be verified.

Even Newton's physics was found by Einstein as a counterexample, not to mention our hypothesis.

Exploring the essence of things is a never-ending step. Consultants have the habit of thinking about some important issues for a long time. Even at different stages, I will overturn my previous thoughts and practices.

Because, growth thinking is the basic ability of consultants.

Friendly tip: beware of fallacies: you need to be careful of basic fallacies and causal fallacies (if you are interested, you can wait for Brown to write another article "Common Logical Fallacies of Consultants").

It takes half a second to see through the essence of things, and it takes a lifetime to see through the essence of things, which is doomed to be a completely different fate.
