Gu brief introduction

Gu (16 13- 1682), formerly known as Jiang, was loyal and honest. After the death of Ming Chengzu, he changed his name to Yanwu, the word Ningren, and was once a maid in Shan Jiang. Scholars respect Mr Lin Ting. A native of Kunshan County, Zhili, Ming Dynasty (now Kunshan, Suzhou, Jiangsu), he was a famous thinker and scholar in the late Ming and early Qing Dynasties.

Knowledgeable, he, together with Huang Zongxi and Wang Fuzhi, is called "three great Confucians in late Ming and early Qing Dynasty", "three gentlemen in early Qing Dynasty" or "three great thinkers in late Ming and early Qing Dynasty".

Gu's article is pragmatic, practical, simple and natural, and well organized. Poetry, such as Du Fu, is meticulous in the use of classical works and pays more attention to current affairs. In his later years, the poetic style changed greatly, full of imagination, and even the immortal Taoism was integrated into the poem.

Gu opposed the empty talk of "mind, reason, nature and destiny" in Neo-Confucianism in Song and Ming Dynasties, advocated practical learning and the learning of utensils, and emphasized that "the metaphysical person refers to the Tao, the metaphysical person refers to the device, and the person who has no device refers to nothing", so he proposed to replace Neo-Confucianism with "simple learning".

In the mid-Qing Dynasty, many scholars advocated the study of historical classics, and repeatedly studied the history of China from astronomical geography to epigraphy, which was called "Ganjia School". Gu, on the other hand, is generally regarded as the main founder of this school because of his rigorous style of study in historical research.

Gu's former residence is located in Qiandeng Puxi, Qiandeng Ancient Town, Nan 'an. The former residence was founded by Gu's grandfather, destroyed by the Japanese army during Jiajing period and rebuilt by Emperor Jiajing. Gu's former residence is an east-west five-door mansion. The main hall, Yi 'an Hall, is an Amin dynasty building with carved beams and painted buildings. There are ancient tombs and stone horses in the back garden of the former residence.
