Leo is the abbreviation of "Lion of Youth Olympic Games". He is a sports enthusiast, very funny, and hopes to encourage young people to exercise actively, keep healthy and enjoy the fun sports bring to life. Leo symbolizes the infinite vitality of young people and their determination to live colorful, passionate and constantly pursuing Excellence.
Merly's name is taken from "Mer" (for the sea) and "ly", which stands for youth and vitality. As an environmentalist, Melly believes that everyone should contribute to create a sustainable future together. At the same time, she also advocates that young people actively participate in community activities and respect each other.
Mascot naming
From August 14 to September 6, 2009, citizens were invited to participate in the mascot naming activities. During the activity, about 375 suggestions were received from 20 countries. Leo was named Sean Pang Yiwei, while Melly was named Dong Zhijun. Sean and Zhijun are both Singaporeans, so they are lucky to be the first people to witness Leo and Melly at the release ceremony.
