The Regulations on AIDS Prevention and Control promulgated by the State Council in 2006 [1] stipulates that "disease prevention and control institutions shall conduct medical follow-up for HIV-infected people and AIDS patients according to the principle of territorial management". Up to now, China has provided medical follow-up service at least once a year for every HIV-infected person/patient diagnosed, and carried out health guidance and behavioral intervention.

AIDS is a chronic infectious disease. China Disease Prevention and Control Information System AIDS Comprehensive Prevention and Control Data Information Management System collects long-term and dynamic information on case follow-up, treatment and death of HIV-infected people/patients reported all over the country over the years. Therefore, the death reflected by the number of AIDS deaths each year is different from other legally reported infectious diseases, mainly in the following aspects:
0 1
The number of AIDS deaths includes not only the number of deaths found when medical institutions treat patients, but also the number of deaths found when CDC actively follows up patients. Other legally reported infectious diseases usually only include deaths found by medical institutions when treating patients.
02
The number of AIDS deaths refers to the total cause of death reported by the cumulative reported cases in that year, including both AIDS-related deaths, traffic accidents, drug overdose, other diseases, suicides and other AIDS-related deaths. Other legally reported deaths from infectious diseases represent deaths caused by a certain disease.
03
The number of AIDS deaths includes not only the number of deaths in that year, but also the number of previous deaths found and reported during the follow-up in that year. Other notifiable infectious diseases only collect deaths caused by a certain disease found in that year.
In addition, the system not only collects the death data of patients diagnosed with AIDS, but also collects the death data of HIV-infected people who have not yet developed into AIDS.
In the national epidemic situation of legal infectious diseases in 2020, 188 19 people died of AIDS (that is, the number of deaths of AIDS patients, excluding the number of deaths of HIV-infected people), and the reported cases accounted for 17% in 2020 (among them, AIDS-related deaths accounted for 46% and unrelated deaths accounted for 54%).

AIDS is still the main infectious disease endangering the health of our people. The number of survivors infected with HIV in China is increasing year by year. Although a series of treatment and nursing measures such as antiviral therapy have been implemented, the proportion of AIDS deaths has been decreasing year by year, and it is very difficult to reduce the number of AIDS deaths. Correctly interpreting these report data can not only enhance our confidence in fighting AIDS, but also scientifically evaluate the achievements in AIDS prevention and control.
