Qianhai-Hongshui Bridge, the "Shenzhen-Hong Kong Western Cross-sea Railway" is coming! Preliminary route exposure

Recently, according to the Shenzhen Municipal Bureau of Planning and Natural Resources, new progress has been made in the planning and research of the Hong Kong-Shenzhen Western Railway (Hongshuiqiao-Qianhai)!

Shenzhen and Hong Kong are promoting the planning and research of the Hong Kong-Shenzhen Western Railway (Hongshuiqiao-Qianhai) through the "Special Course on Promoting the Infrastructure Construction of Cross-border Railway between Shenzhen and Hong Kong" and its "Technical Group".

At present, the first phase of research work has been completed, the strategic value and necessity of the project have been established, and the preliminary feasible scheme of the project has been drawn up.

The project will connect the Hongshuiqiao/Xiacun New Development Zone in Hong Kong with Shenzhen Qianhai, aiming to further improve and strengthen the cross-border traffic connection of Shenzhen Western Development Corridor, seize the new opportunities brought by "comprehensively deepening the reform and opening-up plan of Qianhai Shenzhen-Hong Kong Modern Service Industry Cooperation Zone" and "the development strategy of northern metropolitan area", and promote the high-level coordinated development of Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.

Earlier, the governments of Shenzhen and Hong Kong agreed to appoint a consultant company to carry out the second phase of the Hong Kong-Shenzhen Western Railway (from Hongshuiqiao to Qianhai) under the framework of the "Technical Group". In order to ensure the integrity of the cross-border railway research project, Shenzhen Planning and Natural Resources Bureau took the lead in launching a unified bidding procedure on June 28, 2022 to study the planning, feasibility, benefits, environmental impact, construction and operation arrangements of the Hong Kong-Shenzhen western railway (Hongshuiqiao-Qianhai).

At present, the notice of winning the bid for the second phase of the study has been issued. The consulting companies that won the bid are Shenzhen Planning and Land Development Research Center (the leader of the consortium), China Railway Fourth Survey and Design Institute Group Co., Ltd. (a member of the consortium) and Atkins Consulting Co., Ltd. (a member of the consortium).

The second phase of the study will be officially launched in early 2023 and is expected to be completed in mid-2024.

In addition, according to the relevant information provided by the Hong Kong Transport and Logistics Bureau, the relevant departments have started the Strategic Study on Railway and Main Roads Crossing 2030 (this study) in June 2020, and discussed the layout of railway and main roads infrastructure according to the final proposal of Hong Kong 2030: Planning Vision and Strategic Crossing 2030.

The study initially recommended the construction of three major railways and three major roads. The three strategic railways include the Hong Kong-Shenzhen Western Railway (from Hongshuiqiao to Qianhai), the China Railway and the south extension of the Tseung Kwan O Line; The three main roads include Beidu Highway, Sha Tin Bypass and Tseung Kwan O-Yau Tong Tunnel.

Here is a detailed introduction to the preliminary planning of the western railway between Hong Kong and Shenzhen (from Hongshuiqiao to Qianhai):

● The route of the Hong Kong section is about 8 kilometers, starting from Hongshui Bridge and connecting Shenzhen Qianhai, and stations can be added along the railway in Hong Kong (such as Xiacun and Liufushan);

● Hongshuiqiao Station is reserved for expansion flexibility, connecting other areas of Hong Kong through existing and other planned railway projects;

● Facilitate exchanges between Hong Kong and Shenzhen, and promote the integration, development and interconnection between Hong Kong and Greater Bay Area.
