Kangda: Alzheimer's disease. She doesn't remember me. I designed this house myself. I hope they have a good life.
Mom: This is not Qingping. Don't talk nonsense I'd better go back.
Reporter: Where are you going?
Mom: My home. This is Magpie Hutong. This is not qingping.
Kangda: Look at the trees at the door and the environment. There is a house number at the door. Let me show you.
Mom: I know, the house number can't be wrong.
Kangda: Qingping 30, is this our home?
Mom: Yes.
Kangda: Is this tree from Beijing Station?
Mom: Yes, this tree has been around for decades.
Kangdahe mom
Kangda's mother suffers from Alzheimer's disease, which is what we often say. In order to make her mother live a better life, Kangda personally redesigned her former home. But her mother didn't know the transformed home, and desperately cried out to go home.
Disease is like an eraser in my mind, erasing the memory of Kang's mother, and even sometimes, erasing Kang Da.
Kangda: It was a difficult time for nurses. After all, at that moment, she didn't remember that I was her son.
suffer
Mother of Alzheimer's disease.
Even so, my mother has never forgotten this home where she grew up, married and had children, and lived for 64 years.
Mom: My home is in Qingping Hutong. Beijing Railway Station is also an old house. I am with my parents, sister and brother.
Looking for it day by day and getting to know it again day by day, Kangda accompanied her mother and gradually understood the meaning of the old house to her mother.
Kangda: I think it's also because there are many people and things here that can help her remind her constantly, that is, this is her home, this is her familiar environment, and these are her family. She also wants to try her best to preserve this memory.
In fact, she was more afraid than us and forgot about us.

Kangda is a Beijing guy in his thirties. The biggest difference with his peers is that he almost gave up all social activities and work and took care of his sick mother with his father every day.
His life, according to the schedule of taking medicine, revolves around his mother all the time. Over time, he really finds that there are huge problems in his design.
Before the transition
▲
Mom likes to be busy. Kangda got through the whole space when transforming herself, giving up the bedroom and giving her more living room space. However, this transformation and the height of the floor make this home too cold to stay in winter.
▲
It's cold at home in winter. Kangda rented a big house for her mother in the North Sixth Ring Road, but it can only be used for winter, because her mother is always in a hurry to go home. In order to accommodate my mother, the whole family has been living a life of renting a house for the winter, stopping to keep warm and moving back to the hutong.
▲
There is no place to wash your hands in the bathroom, and there is no sink. You can only use the sink in the kitchen for washing, washing clothes and washing vegetables.
▲
The bathroom is too small. Kangda and dad are very inconvenient to scrub their mother.
▲ For mom, the whole space is compressed, and Kangda can only sleep on the sofa in the living room every night.
Difficulties in transformation
▲ insulation
▲ daylighting
▲ ventilation
▲ Try to restore the spatial pattern before the renovation of Kangda.
▲ Parents and Kangda have independent space.
The biggest difficulty: how to increase barrier-free measures so that mothers with Alzheimer's disease can accept the reformed home
Is being renovated.
It is too difficult to meet some functional requirements and then keep the original memory of the house. If mom can't accept the transformed home, it's a failed transformation.
Through talking with her mother, the designer learned that her mother was persistent in the plane layout of the original house.
South elevation of the first draft and the second draft.
▲ The designer's original design plan, the addition of skylight will introduce natural light into the room to a greater extent, because neighbors oppose the skylight and abandon it.
▲ The designer tried his best to restore the original four-beam and eight-column structure of the house and the design of five rooms through the description in his mother's memory.
▲ Re-pouring concrete foundation and laying floor heating.
▲ In order to keep warm, the designer designed a glass curtain wall around the wall. Later, the promised neighbors could not accept 10㎝ the glass curtain wall protruding from the wall, and the communication failed, so they had to dismantle it.
▲ However, when the designer was ready to paste the insulation layer on the indoor wall, such transformation was stopped by the relevant departments and the wall was demolished again.
Just when the renovation was stuck, no one expected that after moving out of the old house, my mother was admitted to the hospital for examination because of some cough, but the result was the worst. My mother has advanced lung cancer, and her condition is developing very rapidly.
Mother was admitted to hospital for rescue.
The ongoing transformation faces the most difficult and cruel choice. The program group asked Kangda that if the transformation stopped at this time, the program group would respect his decision. Kangda decided to continue the transformation. This is the home that my mother misses most, and it may also be the place where her life ends. He thinks that the last time in her life is warm.
When leaving, the host received this message:
To be honest, I have always said that taking care of my mother is like a marathon, and now it may be time for you to see the end. Suddenly I feel that nothing is enough. The biggest luck this time is to participate in the program, and there are so many video materials, which is the biggest gain.

In order to speed up the progress of the project, the designer made the biggest concession. Of course, behind this concession is the great sacrifice of the designer.

After the renovation, I didn't see many high-tech barrier-free products because my mother didn't like it.
▲ The facade has restored the style of the main house, and the antique appearance is mainly based on the color of the original wooden column, trying to restore the original appearance.
▲ The original roof was renovated, and the newly made furniture was old. The designer expects that the new decoration will not make Kang's mother feel too abrupt. Therefore, the exposed steel columns are all wrapped in solid wood, and wooden columns that are very close to the original appearance are added.
▲ One corner of the yard became a garden, and the small garden in my mother's memory was restored.
▲ The old coffee table left by Grandpa was put back in the most conspicuous place in the living room. Windows are all glass with three glasses and two cavities, which belongs to the glass with the best heat insulation performance, and a heat insulation film is added to the glass.
▲ Because of my mother's physical condition, most designers choose antibacterial materials. Designers use high environmental protection children's paint on their walls.
▲ Mom's favorite painting was placed in the most conspicuous position in the restaurant. All windows can be opened horizontally or lifted from above.
▲ This barrier-free passage can reach all areas on the first floor. There are handrails on one side and all the furniture on the other side is round, which is very safe.
▲ Because I found that my mother likes to do housework in the kitchen with my father when renting a house, the designer customized the cabinet according to my mother's sitting height and wheelchair size.
▲ There is a hidden small table in the cupboard. When Kangda is not at home, parents can eat in the kitchen without moving to the restaurant.
▲ The kitchen is fully equipped with lighting on three sides. The Chinese rose decorated outside the window is the best scenery in a family.
▲ The seemingly inconspicuous bathroom is made of nano cement, which is waterproof and retains the old feeling.
▲ Because my mother will be incontinent, the designer installed a washing machine, dryer and mini washing machine to wash underwear. Bathing space, the designer made a stool to bathe his mother.
▲ The beds in the parents' room can be combined or separated, and there is enough storage space under the bed.
▲ The stairs leading to the second floor prevent mom from climbing. The designer set up a secret door. The wooden board beside the stairs can be turned over, and natural light can be introduced into the stairwell during the day.
▲ Kangda's room on the second floor, after five days of polishing and painting by Nippon Refresh staff, the wooden structure of the whole roof changed from dusty shabby feeling to gentle years luster.
▲ Brush Japanese wood paint after polishing to maintain the texture of logs and resist yellowing and scratching.
▲ Two intelligent switches in the living room and Kangda room can automatically adjust the lights according to the set time. It automatically darkens at 9: 30 every night, indicating that it is time to go to bed. After zero, automatically start the night light mode.
Kangda: Mom, you will take care of these flowers in the future.
Mom: I will take care of it. Aren't these flowers?
Kangda: Mom, the bell at Beijing Railway Station is ringing again. Is this our home?
Mom: Yes.
Kangda: Mom, what do you think?
Mom: OK, it's warm. Look, how beautiful these flowers are.

Ask and answer. A
Q:
This is your first time to participate in Nippon's Dream Transformers column. What made you willing to accept the invitation of the program group?
A:
After receiving the invitation, I thought for a long time. This project in the column of Nippon Dream Transformers is very different from the previous projects of architecture or government departments. It is about "home", an ordinary house in Beijing Hutong. It is Kangda's filial piety and payment to his parents that moved me. At this age, most of our energy is focused on ourselves and our work, but he quit his job and took care of his mother 24 hours a day. I want to pass on this love and emotion and influence more people. China has entered an aging society, and home-based care for the aged is a social problem.
Q:
Architecture gives people a rational feeling, and it is a warm and emotional thing to transform "home", especially such a special home. How to grasp the degree between the two?
A:
In fact, a good work should be a combination of rationality and sensibility. Only the rational space is cold, and only by integrating emotions and expectations for the future and letting vitality enter the space can we really help and impress the people in it.
Q:
What is the biggest difficulty in shaping space?
A:
Break the traditional space and give it new vitality. The biggest difficulty should be the incomprehension from different people. The life of most people in China is relatively simple, especially the residents in the old city. A generation lives in a small courtyard, just like this transformation. Maybe their house is expensive, but they don't want to break their present life. In fact, their quality of life can be better. Our design is to solve contradictions, and I want to influence others with my own design.
Q:
This change can be said to be a very heavy change. What is your biggest feeling about this change?
A:
This is an impossible renovation project. In such a small place, parents are still patients, especially mothers, who have never been exposed to such projects before. This project has given me a deeper understanding of people's needs, especially home-based care for the elderly.
