The annual average daily design traffic volume of expressway should be above 15000 passenger cars, and the design speed is 80- 120km.
Expressway is a kind of highway classified according to technical grade, which is higher than first-class highway, second-class highway, third-class highway, fourth-class highway and other highways. Expressway and national highway or provincial highway under the classification of road network state are cross-related, that is, expressway is a part of China Road or provincial highway of road network. In urban road system, expressways can be built according to expressway standards, because the basic structural characteristics of expressways and expressways are the same. Expressway network and expressway are different concepts. The expressway network includes not only the expressway lines that meet the technical grade standards, but also some expressway lines that undertake the function of high-speed transportation. Most of them are closed first-class highways, which are often connected with other expressways to collect fees. Freeways and first-class highways belong to high-grade highways.
