Notes on Introduction to Design —— Chapter 6, Section 4

First, service consciousness.

(1) Design creation is a conscious and purposeful social behavior, not a designer's "self-expression". As the main body of design creation, designers should be clear about their social responsibilities and consciously use design to serve the society and benefit mankind.

(2) As the main body of design creation, the designer's design must be used to improve people's living conditions and environment and create better living conditions and environmental services for people. Simple sentence: "Design for the benefit of mankind". This is the requirement of society for designers and the lofty social responsibility of designers. Only by achieving this goal can the designer's design be meaningful and the designer can realize his own value.

"Design for the benefit of mankind" By "human", I mean all people. The purpose of design is to meet the needs of most people, not to serve a small number of people, especially the forgotten majority, which is what designers should pay more attention to. Some people in the field of design theory put forward the principles of "moderate design", "healthy design" and "beautiful design".

(3) We advocate that designers "design for the benefit of mankind", which sounds very abstract and vague. In fact, designers should first establish correct values and sense of responsibility, that is, the professional ethics of design, which is the basis for fulfilling social responsibilities. Before starting every design, a designer should have a correct moral judgment on the design task he faces, and judge whether his design will benefit or harm the social interests.

(4) More importantly, designers should closely link their own designs with people's needs. Designers should not only face the market, design for the market, but also face the society, pay attention to the society, pay attention to people's living conditions, pay attention to people's real needs, do their best to design for meeting these needs, for the society and for the benefit of mankind.
