Does the counselor have to keep everything the client says confidential?

The principle of confidentiality is the professional ethics that professional psychological counselors must abide by. If the counselor reveals the secrets of the visitors without their consent, the visitors have the right to defend their rights through legal channels, and the counselor is likely to be disqualified.

Of course, the principle of confidentiality is not absolute, and the following situations can be exceptions:

With the consent of the visitors, the consultation content can be used as cases or teaching materials in teaching or treatment.

When a visitor is suicidal, the psychological counselor can notify his guardian without the consent of the visitor to ensure his life safety.

If the visitor violates the laws of China during and after the consultation, the consultant has the right to inform the police of the visitor's information according to law when cooperating with the police investigation.

Basically, except for the above, the psychological counselor keeps the information of the visitors absolutely confidential, even to the parents and relatives of the visitors. Of course, these contents will be clearly informed to the visitors and their guardians before the formal psychological consultation or during the first psychological consultation.
