Reasons for the formation of Shilin scenic spot

Yunnan Shilin Geopark is a karst geological park with Shilin landform as its main landscape. The Late Paleozoic was a coastal-shallow sea environment, with thousands of meters of limestone and dolomite deposited, which laid the foundation for the formation of stone forest landform in this area. After the crustal movement uplifted in the later period, it became land, and was eroded by groundwater and surface water along rock cracks in many stages, eventually forming various combinations of stone forest landscapes. The earliest stone forest was formed in the late Early Permian more than 250 million years ago, and the latest stone forest is still in the process of formation, during which it experienced the coverage of basalt and lake clastic deposits and repeated uplift and erosion. Under the unique geological, climatic and hydrological conditions, multi-stage stone forests inherit and develop, overlap each other and have distinct levels.

Kunming Shilin Scenic Area has the most diverse karst forms in Shilin. There are the most typical stone forest karst forms in the world, not only well-developed sword karst and blade ridge karst, but also mushroom karst and tower karst. It can be described as the "Shilin Karst Museum" with high scientific and aesthetic value.

Kunming Shilin Scenic Area is the only stone forest located in subtropical plateau area at present. In the nature reserve, low stone teeth and tall stone pillars are widely distributed in various landforms such as mountains, valleys and depressions, and are closely related to caves, lakes and waterfalls, forming a panoramic view of karst landforms. In particular, there are a series of stone pillars 20-50 meters high, which look like a forest from a distance. People call it "Stone Forest" when they look at things. The word Shilin originated here and is an ideal place to study regional geological evolution and karst process.
