What procedures and materials are needed for marriage registration?

The marriage registration process is roughly as follows:

(1) application

Couples who meet the requirements for marriage registration can bring relevant certificates, supporting materials and registration photos, apply for marriage registration at the marriage registration office where one party's household registration is located, and fill in the declaration required for applying for marriage registration on the spot.

The materials for applying for marriage registration depend on the specific circumstances. For example, when China citizens apply for marriage registration in China, they need to hold their ID card, household registration book, marriage examination certificate, single certificate and declaration of no blood relationship (lineal blood relatives and collateral blood relatives within three generations) and other materials. Divorce application for remarriage, should also carry a divorce certificate.

Foreigners (including foreigners residing or temporarily staying in China, China people and foreigners residing in China) applying for marriage in Chinese mainland must hold their valid passports, Alien Residence Permit issued by public security organs or valid temporary residence permit in China, and proof of marital status issued by embassies and consulates in China.

(2) Review

The marriage registration office will examine the application of the parties to find out whether the documents and certificates meet the conditions for marriage. If the application materials submitted by the parties are unknown, the marriage registration authority will generally ask the parties and ask them to provide materials related to the application for marriage registration when necessary.

(3) Registration and licensing

The marriage registration office will register eligible couples and then issue marriage certificates; For those who have experienced divorce, the marriage registration office will generally cancel the divorce certificate; If necessary, a written statement shall be issued to those who do not meet the conditions for marriage registration, explaining the reasons for not being registered.

What procedures and documents do you need for divorce?

If the application conditions for divorce registration are not met, it will not be accepted, and the parties may request to issue a notice of rejection of the application for divorce registration.

(3) cooling-off period

Within 30 days from the date when the marriage registration office receives the application for divorce registration and issues a receipt for accepting the application for divorce registration to the parties concerned, if one party does not want to divorce, they can withdraw the application for divorce registration at the marriage registration office where the application for divorce registration is accepted by presenting their valid identity documents and the Receipt for Accepting Divorce Registration (the situation can be explained in writing if the receipt is lost), and fill out the Application for Withdrawal of Divorce Registration and other relevant documents in person. After verification by the marriage registration authority, a Confirmation Letter for Withdrawing the Application for Divorce Registration will be issued.
