The second emperor of the Tang Dynasty was surrounded by talented people, and Fang and Du Ruhui were two of them. This idiom tells their story.
Fang was born in an official family and was proficient in poetry. At the age of eighteen, he took part in scientific research and was admitted to Jinshi. After he rose up against the Sui Dynasty, Fang was sent out with him for many times to give advice. Li Shimin's father admired his cleverness very much and thought that this man would be entrusted with an important task in the future. Later, Fang participated in the planning of "Xuanwumen mutiny" and helped Emperor Taizong and his throne smoothly.
Fang was good at planning and had a unique vision, which was deeply trusted by Emperor Taizong. According to legend, when Li Shimin was the king of Qin, he crusaded against rebellion everywhere. Whenever one side is pacified, other generals are eager to compete for and search for antiques and treasures. Only Fang looked for people with lofty ideals everywhere, made friends with them privately, and invited them to be the aides of the Qin shogunate and work for the king of Qin. He recruited countless talents for Emperor Taizong, and even Du Ruhui was recommended by Fang Lingxuan to be reused by Emperor Taizong!
Du Ruhui was young and talented, quick-witted and decisive, and joined forces with Fang. * * * helped Emperor Taizong to create the prosperous Tang Dynasty. Emperor Taizong established the Literature Museum, and Du Ruhui held an important position in the Museum, ranking first among the 18 bachelors in the Literature Museum. His talent is evident. Du Ruhui died at the age of 46, and Emperor Taizong wept bitterly for it. Many years later, Emperor Taizong still often thought of Du Ruhui. On the day of his death, he always sent officials to his home to offer condolences.
Fang and Du Ruhui lived in the same dynasty. Fang is good at making suggestions but indecisive, while Du Ruhui is decisive but not good at strategy. So every time something happens, Fang can always give many solutions, and Du Ruhui can always analyze these ideas and choose the one that is most suitable for Emperor Taizong to adopt.
Fang is good at planning, Du Ruhui is good at decision-making, two people know each other and cherish each other, and Qi Xin works together to assist the emperor. Therefore, it is called "striving for the end", which means to cooperate with each other and learn from each other's strengths. Later generations regarded these two men as models of beauty and collectively called them "Du Fang".
