How can I become a CIO?

Attitude is the first fundamental.

Pragmatic attitude is the first fundamental of CIO.

Pragmatic, what is pragmatic? CIO is basically an IT person, and we know that IT is the unshirkable responsibility of IT people to meet the needs of enterprises. Only the satisfaction of all departments in enterprises is the success of CIO. However, CIO is really bad. I once met a CIO who complained to me: I used three sentences to describe ERP. At first, everyone didn't understand ERP, and they didn't have any hope. At this time, ERP was called "no need to scold" because he didn't understand it, so he couldn't criticize it; The second stage is called "the more you use it, the more you curse it." Why is it used more and more? Everyone knows that ERP is a good thing, but because the demand of enterprises has increased rapidly under the inspiration of ERP, the speed of software improvement can't keep up with the pace of users, so "the more you use it, the more you scold it"; It stands to reason that since you have been swearing, you should not use it, but ERP has a third stage, which is called "swearing while using". That is to say, although you are not satisfied with it, you will find that both work and management can not be separated from ERP after using it. So as far as CIO's own task is concerned, it is really difficult for users to be completely satisfied.

Second, the CIO must understand the role of his job. CIO is the hero behind the enterprise, and CIO is the right-hand man of the top leader of enterprise information. Although enterprises will certainly succeed because of the success of informatization, it is undeniable that informatization plays an indispensable role in the success of enterprises.

Third, the CIO should be clear about the priorities of the enterprise, where the pain points are, what the enterprise needs most and why. Because of limited resources, limited time, limited funds, and limited talents. Therefore, CIO should learn to grasp the key points and start from the pain points of enterprises. For example, I once met a company that didn't know much about ERP. This customer belongs to a manufacturing enterprise and has received many orders, but the production capacity is seriously insufficient. We feel very strange when implementing ERP planning. They talked about overall planning, and I said we agreed to overall planning. Things should be planned as a whole. The second thing, they said to implement it step by step, and I said to implement it step by step, because it is impossible to do it overnight. But they said the third thing, I can't agree. They say finance should be the first priority. This enterprise, because of financial computerization, used the software of financial computerization, but now it is incorrect for them to put finance first, because it is obvious that the pain of this enterprise is the serious shortage of production management, manufacturing management and production capacity. When the production capacity is seriously insufficient, management is more important. If we can effectively support the most painful part of the enterprise at this stage, it will be the greatest help to the operation of the whole enterprise. Therefore, a clear understanding of priorities and starting from the pain points of enterprises is the pragmatic attitude that CIO should have.

Three majors of CIO

There is a specialization in the industry.

The CIO must be professional. However, this major is not a professional technology that people simply think, but several necessary functions as a CIO.

The first major is to be able to correctly understand and guide the needs of users. Most users don't know what they want. I have contacted many users, and some users asked me to choose the type. "I don't know how to choose the type, so I'd better let your information staff choose the type." In fact, this attitude needs to be revised, because I want to say: "Yes, you don't know, but as a manager of an enterprise, you can't help but know management". Take a manufacturing enterprise as an example. These people who are responsible for production management, material management, quality management and design change are all our users. Of course, these people may not all know information technology, but they must not be absent in the process of ERP selection and implementation. And with the help of CIO, we should combine these people who know but don't necessarily know with those who don't know. But for CIO, IT is necessary to combine the two, that is, IT technology and management. The core business of an enterprise is something CIO must understand.
