Davld Robson commented that Bawa has successfully created a series of revolutionary architectural prototypes for his native Sri Lanka. Under the background of a newly independent country that has ruled for four centuries, he integrated different branches of complex ethnic groups, excavated rich historical heritage and cast new architectural landmarks.
To get to know a person comprehensively, it is wise to visit his home. After the ink design team of 2065438+2007 arrived in Colombo in May, Sir Zhong of Taiwan Province Province, the head of the team, took us to visit Ba Wa's home in Colombo to experience the design concept of tropical naturalism in Ba Wa. I chose to have lunch by myself in Bawa's studio in Colombo. Both old houses are crowded between the dense old houses, but the internal space is self-contained. They have become a place of worship for designers.
Bawa started his career as an architect at the age of 38. At the age of 40, he lived in an old house on 33rd Street in Colombo. The old house is located in the suburb of the old city, at the end of bagatelle Road, sandwiched in a brick house. It took him nearly ten years to buy four houses at the end of the path. Over the past decades, four houses have been gradually integrated into a complex inner courtyard mansion through continuous transformation, addition or demolition.
33rd Street in Colombo is very quiet. Most old houses have two floors, which are patchwork. The exterior wall is simple white, especially under the blue sky and white clouds. The small courtyard is shaded by trees, and the branches and leaves stretch and sway in the wind, as if welcoming ink-saving designers from China. The door of Bawa's self-occupied house is very distinctive, with fine wooden sliding doors and 45-degree wooden strips inlaid neatly. The push-pull of the door is stable and firm, and ventilation and light transmission are also taken into account.
Entering Ba Wa's self-occupied house on 33rd Street, you can see that the house is self-contained and has a great spatial layout.
Adding natural elements such as ventilation, lighting and courtyard landscape to old houses is the first choice. The wall shared with the neighbors is the gable of the old house. During the renovation, Bawa opened many small patios on the edge of his house. Finally, some rooms were demolished and transformed into back gardens; Add a tower. The increase or decrease of space and the expansion of space make the old house flexible in space and good in ventilation and lighting.
In the process of renovation, Ba Wa kept the alley between the old houses and used it as a passage inside the house. These tortuous passages connect rooms with different functions, courtyards and patios with different sizes.
During the visit, the deep old house flickered. Under the guidance of smart natural light, I walked along the maze-like passage to the depths of the old house. Step by step. The natural landscape that the old house can borrow is the ever-changing sky, branches and flowers extending through the courtyard wall, a small pool for rainwater in the small courtyard, water lilies and goldfish in the pool. Finally, in the back garden, the fragrant flowers and old trees danced and the windows were bright and clean. Stepping on the stairs of Bavaga, I went up to the tower, suddenly enlightened, looking up at the blue sky and white clouds, overlooking the neighbor's garden, with lush trees and flowers.
Bawa also retains the structure of the old house. The layout of rooms depends on their functions. Some demolish the roof and some demolish the outer wall, and the indoor and outdoor boundaries are blurred. Together, they construct the infinite possibilities of space composition.
Bawa's love for art is also reflected in the furnishings of this home. The house is full of works of art, which are integrated with the space, environment and furniture of the home. I think I was born here, longer than this.
Under such a limited condition, Bawa created a work that can represent his spiritual world.

The renovation of the old house has set up large and small patios to ensure the ventilation, lighting and natural landscape needed by the house.

Art and home space are in perfect harmony.
The white stairs and towers of the old house have been added.
The top of the tower looks up at the blue sky and white clouds and overlooks the shade of the garden.
Traffic on the road, quiet and elegant room. For this reason, I thought of Foshan, where my home is located. When I was a child, I spied the deep courtyard of a mansion when crossing the street in the old city. There are too many similarities with this old house in Colombo. They are all tropical and subtropical areas. Ventilation, lighting, patio, well, courtyard wall, ancient trees and other facilities and settings in the hospital are natural choices. It's a pity that my Foshan, once known as the historical city of China's four famous towns, has lost its former style and gradually been replaced by high-rise buildings.
This self-occupied house on 33rd Street is the work of Bawa. His design talent is fully displayed here, and his aesthetic taste and love for utensils are unobstructed.
Lunch was chosen in Bawa's own studio, which was also transformed from an old house. The design concept and method of the renovation are the same as those of the house on 33rd Street, but there are more artworks and stronger colors. To my surprise, several large pottery pots were placed in a long and narrow courtyard. It turns out that Bawa really likes to use these big China clay pots as environmental protection devices, and they are all shipped from China. This patio is also on the side of Bawa Studio, adjacent to other houses.
The restaurant is full of diners. Gardens and patios bring sunshine, pool water and green trees to the room, which is comfortable and quiet. Show the charm of its indoor space with photos.

The first day of the architectural tour in Bawa, Sri Lanka, made me feel a lot. Ceng Laoshi, a fellow traveler, said with emotion that it was perfect and satisfying to visit Bawa's own residence so slowly and realize his design concept.
In his private residence on 33rd Street in Colombo, Bawa, his own suite is generally closed to the public. Some colleagues of ink storage design lived here, and in order to show Ba Wa's design more completely, they posted photos provided by them.
