The history of Yiwu Dragon Lantern

The traditional custom of welcoming dragon lanterns began in the Tang Dynasty. It was originally a celebration held by Beijing officials and people for entertainment and celebration of the Lantern Festival. According to legend, after the beheading of King Jinghe by Wei Zhengmeng, the prime minister of the Tang Dynasty, Li Shimin, Emperor Taizong, was moved with compassion and called on the people to greet the dragon lantern to pay homage to King Jinghe. In addition, the Chinese nation has always advocated the worship of dragon gods, and the custom of welcoming dragon lanterns has naturally been passed down from generation to generation, giving each place its own characteristics and welcoming the glory of its own region.

Yiwu has a long history of welcoming dragon lanterns, and there is a folk saying that "there is a wooden faucet first, and then there is a black injury county". According to the textual research of Fu Jian, the teacher of the Municipal Records Office, the book Essentials of Ancient and Modern Notes published by Beijing Publishing House clearly mentioned that "the three nights before and after the Lantern Festival began in the Tang Dynasty", and the "putting" here means "hanging" and "welcoming", so the welcome light began in the Tang Dynasty.
