where
There are 28 flamingos living in the innermost area of the rare bird garden of Hongshan Forest Zoo in Nanjing.
Flamingo, commonly known as red stork, is a large wading bird, belonging to 3 genera and 6 species, including Caribbean red stork, Chilean red stork and red stork.
Flamingos flock in groups, with long necks and legs, red feathers and sounds like geese (some people say cranes and ducks). The most fascinating thing is the color of its feathers, all pink, which is not only enchanting, but also very cute.
Why on earth are flamingos red?
The secret of flamingos' color is that they like to eat algae, plankton and small fish and shrimp in water, while algae and small fish and shrimp are rich in astaxanthin, and the astaxanthin they ingest remains in their bodies. It is because of astaxanthin that they can be red from head to toe.
Flamingo's mouth has a thin filter screen, which can filter spirulina and other foods out of the muddy water and then swallow them.
A flamingo can eat half a catty of spirulina every day. So when the little flamingo matures, its feathers will gradually show bright red, the brighter the color, the stronger the body.
So now flamingos' feathers are not very red. As they grow up and mature, their red will become more and more vivid.
