Why do psychological counselors frequently roll over from the media? !
With the rapid development of mobile Internet, self-media has increasingly become a tool for psychological counselors to self-market and attract cases. More and more visitors are getting used to seeking psychological counseling services by acquiring mental health knowledge from the media. According to a previous survey, 5 1.6% of the visitors will get the information of psychological counselors from the Internet before seeking psychological counseling, of which 53.6% use Baidu search, 39.7% use psychological counseling app, and 36.6% use WeChat official account. While 44.2% of the visitors will browse social media such as Weibo, WeChat, Zhihu, blog, etc. However, since the media helped consultants to quickly accumulate popularity and obtain cases, some consultants' moral anomie behaviors were also rapidly amplified through the Internet, which had a negative impact on the reputation of the whole industry. The recent exposure of several moral anomie incidents makes people feel that the media is a double-edged sword for counselors. It is not only a sign for counselors to show themselves, but also a booster that can make counselors turn over. Those ethical problems that should have been carefully solved under the professional framework were torn off by angry visitors who had no way to defend their rights, and were directly torn off by their hands, which evolved into a series of consultant rollover dramas. On March 2 1 day, a psychological counselor with 200,000+fans in Zhihu revealed that he had had many relationships with visitors and reviewed his many moral misconduct. However, the counselor's self-protection self-exposure did not calm the anger of the visitors as expected, but caused greater anger among the parties, exposing the counselor and his record of opening a house and all kinds of behaviors that ignored black and white. Teacher Jie Zhong, an associate professor of clinical psychology in Peking University, left a message advising visitors to consult a lawyer and report fraud. On April 3rd, another psychological counselor with 500,000+fans in Zhihu and practicing abroad was posted by visitors complaining about a series of problems, such as irregular consultation time and economic exploitation of visitors for 2.5 hours in a single consultation. The consultant immediately gave a "professional" reply to the complaint, but in the eyes of some consultants, it was "unreasonable and narcissistic", which once again triggered a heated discussion in the industry. In the face of the constant turnover of self-media platform consultants, it has been suggested that consultants who frequently update the media as the main means to attract visitors have the distinctive sign of "high-risk consultation". Just like the line in the movie "Evil does not suppress righteousness": How can a serious person (psychological counselor) have time to keep a diary every day (from the media)! This sentence seems reasonable, but there are many misunderstandings about psychological counseling, that is, the professional connotation of psychological counselors is narrowly understood as only consulting. Self-marketing is a necessary skill for psychological counselors, especially individual practitioners. Self-media is only a tool to carry psychological counselors' self-marketing function. Since the first generation psychoanalyst Freud's time, writing has always been an important means for psychological counselors to maintain their personal influence. Only at that time, books, paper and other paper media were the main carriers of this function. If Freud lived in the era of self-media, with his vigorous writing energy, it is conceivable that he will definitely become the top official account of Weibo, Tik Tok and WeChat. Since then, with the rise of TV media, TV programs have become a new media for psychological counselors to self-market. Many well-known big coffees in China have benefited from the mainstream status of TV media and quickly became famous by participating in a TV program. The rise of self-media platforms such as Weibo, WeChat official account and Tik Tok provides a new stage for psychological counselors, and some first-generation online celebrity psychological counselors are the products of the rapid expansion of self-media platforms. Since the media, psychological counselors are essentially an advertising marketing behavior, and their core goal is to gain attention and cases by establishing authoritative professional "personal design". Professional ethics has strict constraints on the advertising behavior of consultants. American Consulting Association (ACA) code of ethics: C.3.b consultants cannot ask current or former visitors or anyone else to advertise for themselves. C.3.d Consultants cannot attract visitors, supervised persons or consultants for themselves in the workplace or places attached to institutions. C.3.f Consultants shall not use fraudulent or improper means to promote their products or related training to visitors by means of consultation, teaching, training and supervision. American Psychological Association (APA) Code of Ethics: 5.04 Media Presentation When psychologists make public suggestions or comments through written, online or other electronic devices, they should ensure that the comments are: (1) based on their own professional knowledge, training or experience, and consistent with relevant psychological literature and practical activities; (2) Conforming to professional ethics; (3) It cannot be implied that a professional relationship has been established with the suggestion recipients or commentators. Abiding by professional ethics itself is a manifestation of professional ability. If the psychological counselor's own professional ability and self-cultivation are insufficient, it is easy to lose himself in the false authoritative professional design, or even lose the professional introspection function and make moral anomie behavior. Therefore, there is nothing wrong with self-media as a tool for self-marketing. What is wrong is actually some consultants who use self-media for self-marketing. Many years ago, this kind of incident was exposed in Zhihu. Zhihu's last big V, with hundreds of thousands of fans, was highly praised by followers because of his profound psychological interpretation of articles. Big V has been pretending to be a counselor, collecting cases from fans, selling online classes, and even supervising counselors. Finally, it was discovered that he was only a social work major in junior year, without any professional qualification. In addition, the inherent characteristics of network communication also make it easy for consultants to roll over when marketing themselves from the media. Different from ordinary interpersonal communication, the process of network communication is highly interactive and anonymous. The characteristics of two-way interaction in network communication make it possible for the audience to attach their own understanding and processing to the information during the communication process. So with the wide spread of information, the possibility of distortion is greatly improved. In addition, network communication is often anonymous, and it is easy to have extreme or even aggressive views. Therefore, some inappropriate comments and unprofessional behaviors of psychological counselors can be easily spread and amplified through online platforms such as the media. Regrettably, at present, there are no psychological counselors in China who use the professional ethics clause of self-media, and the introduction of relevant laws and regulations is far away. In this context, psychological counselors can only rely on self-monitoring to enhance ethical sensitivity and avoid rollover events. What do you think of this?
