Basic research: he presided over the project of "Isolation and functional identification of stress-resistant and insect-resistant genes in trees" in the National 973 Project "Molecular Basic Research of Tree Breeding", screened insect-resistant gene resources containing plant sulfhydryl protease inhibitors and plant lectins, bred Populus tomentosa, a unique insect-resistant tree species in China, cloned two full-length genes of sulfhydryl protease inhibitors from Populus tomentosa, verified the killing function of gene expression products, and clarified the lethal mechanism of locust seed lectin on gypsy moth larvae; He has successively presided over the national natural science foundation projects "Study on molecular genetic diversity and adaptive evolution of pathogenic fungi groups of tree canker" and "Study on genetic diversity and molecular system of pathogenic fungi groups of tree canker", taking large groups of tree canker as the research object and finally forming a research system, and using molecular biology technology to establish a molecular system for detecting, describing and explaining biodiversity and evolutionary laws at the molecular level. The research results prove the objectivity of the traditional taxonomic status of the main genera and the differentiation of species due to geography and hosts at the molecular level. Responsible for the D-funded project "Taxonomy of Basidiomycetes in China" (twice funded) of the returned overseas students from the Ministry of Personnel, and mastered the distribution, hosts and harmful symptoms of this fungus in China. The results of traditional morphological and molecular biological studies of the strain showed the genetic relationship of Basidiomycetes in China and its pathogenic differentiation to host plants. It was also found that 4.3× 106Da dsRNA virus was ubiquitous in all tested strains, which may be related to the pathogenicity of pathogenic fungi to host plants and the occurrence ecology of plant diseases.

Applied research: He once presided over the National 863 Program Project "Study on Ecological Control Techniques and Products of Main Pests and Diseases of Artificial Forests in Ecologically Vulnerable Areas of China", conducted pest control techniques and products based on bioinformatics and chemical ecology, pest control techniques and products based on coupling optimization of rhizosphere micro-ecological environment, pest control techniques and models based on structural optimization of forest biodiversity, and developed poplar disease-resistant health care agent, a product for continuously controlling host-dominated diseases in arid and semi-arid areas of China.
