Brief introduction to history:
Wuhu county was established as early as BC 109. Until the end of the Eastern Han Dynasty, Wei, Shu and Wu fought for the safety of the capital (now Nanjing). In the second year of Huang Wu (A.D. 223), Sun Quan moved Wuhu City to the area of Maoji Mountain in the county, which was the earliest age of Wuhu as a "city" and the embryonic form of "Wuhu Ancient City".
During the political period of Northern Song Dynasty (AD 65438 +065438 +065438 +0-65438 +065438 +065438 +05), Song Cheng was built in Wuhu. Since the Song Dynasty, from Yuan, Ming and Qing Dynasties to the Republic of China for more than 700 years, "Wuhu Ancient City" has been burned and rebuilt many times due to war. In the third year of Wanli in Ming Shenzong (A.D. 1575), the "Wuhu Ancient City" was rebuilt.
In the fifteenth year of Shunzhi in Qing Dynasty (1658), it was rebuilt on the basis of the Ming Dynasty, and a long street was drawn outside the city. In the second year of Guangxu, Wuhu was turned into a trading port, and the broken city wall was expanded into a ring road.
The city is mainly composed of Huajie Street, Nanzheng Street, Xinshi Street, Rulin Street and Xiaojiaxiang. There are many shops on both sides of the street, mostly two-story brick and wood buildings, which are Huizhou folk houses. The front shop and backyard are all covered with slate granite strips, and there are sewers. Nanzheng Street, which was formed in Wanli period of Ming Dynasty, is the earliest commercial pedestrian street in our city, with the style of Jiangnan historical traditional pedestrian street.
Wuhu is located at the intersection of the Yangtze River and Qingyi River. In the era of agriculture as the leading industry and water transportation as the main mode, relying on the golden waterway of the Yangtze River and the vast hinterland of agricultural areas in southern Anhui along the Qingyi River, Wuhu City survived, developed and expanded in the Tang and Song Dynasties.
During the Ming and Qing Dynasties, especially after 1876, Wuhu rice market rose with the background of Li Hongzhang's family, and the rapid integration and further development of foreign culture and Wuhu's social economy made Wuhu city expand rapidly and become one of the most prosperous cities along the Yangtze River in Anhui.
The "Shili Long Street" and "Wuhu Ancient City" left over now are the best testimony of Wuhu's glory. It is the "annual ring" of the city and a rare urban context.
The "Wuhu Ancient City" retains a lot of historical information, including administration, military affairs, justice, government, education, religion, academies, commerce and so on. The organizational system is very complete, which also reflects the characteristics of Wuhu's land and water transportation and commerce. Although it has experienced many wars in the late Ming Dynasty and the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom, it has always maintained a complete layout, with all kinds of administration, military, justice and religion.
