Hunan University of Traditional Chinese Medicine was founded in 1934, formerly known as Hunan College of Traditional Chinese Medicine. 1960 was transformed into Hunan college of traditional Chinese medicine, and 1979 became the first college in China to obtain the qualification of postgraduate education in traditional Chinese medicine. The former Hunan University of Science and Technology was merged into Hunan College of Traditional Chinese Medicine on 1990.
In 2002, it merged with Hunan College of Traditional Chinese Medicine and was renamed Hunan University of Traditional Chinese Medicine with the approval of the Ministry of Education in 2006. Hunan University of Traditional Chinese Medicine and Hunan College of Traditional Chinese Medicine are implementing a unified management system.
