1On April 8, 1997, a No.3 alarm fire broke out in Mei Foo San Tsuen. The deceased included the mother and nephew of the late writer James J.S.Wong. At that time, a female resident on the sixth floor of Block 3 of Phase II was smoking and burning the bedding in her apartment bed, which spread to other people's rented rooms as warehouses. The stored plastic and styrofoam items caught fire, causing intense burning and generating a lot of smoke. Because most of the smoke doors in the building were open, they failed to stop the smoke and flames, and the smoke quickly enveloped the whole building. On February 20th, 2003, the Kowloon-Canton Railway (now known as the MTR West Line) connecting Tuen Mun Station and Nanchang Station was opened to traffic. The Kowloon-Guangxi Railway has set up a station in Mei Foo and meets the Tsuen Wan Line of MTR (now known as MTR).
