What's a Barton tank?

M48 Barton tank (M48 Patton) is the third generation Barton series tank of the US Army. M48 Barton was mainly used as a medium-sized tank during the Cold War, and its service period probably lasted from the early 1950s to the present. The design of M48 is improved on the basis of M47 Barton. Later, although it was replaced with the introduction of American M60 Barton, the M48 family used by American allies absorbed the new technology of M60 and even M 1 tank, improved it, continued to serve and extended its service life. To this day, the M48A5 series continues to serve in the armies of some countries.

The M48 tank was originally designed to replace the M47 Barton, which served earlier, and the M4 Sherman tank since World War II. Although most of its components are similar to M47, M48 tank is a brand-new design. In the United States, some M48A5 models have been in service until1980s; In other countries, the M48 tank series has even continued to be used as a combat readiness. The M48 tank is also the last tank in the United States with a 90mm main gun. Its subsequent development model (M48A5) also changed its main gun with the same caliber as M60 (105mm).

The Turkish army is the biggest user of the improved M48. The country has more than 1 4,000 M48 tanks of various models, of which about 1 4,000 have been sealed up or used as rescue vehicles.
