R&D background
In addition to Hutchison Whampoa, Renault and FCM, AMX also participated in the design of the next generation of light tanks of the French Army. The Ishlemlino factory (AMX) located in the south of Paris used to be Renault's tank factory. 1936 became state-owned and became the last company to participate in the competition. Their tank plan, later named AMX38, was designed in 1937.
Brief introduction of performance
The design idea of AMX38 tank is to increase the mobility of the vehicle as much as possible and reduce the weight (heavier than another FCM36 tank designed by the same project1.15t) under the condition of having armor capable of defending shells (thickness 40 mm). This weight was later considered by historians to be the weight of a medium-sized tank.
On the other hand, although equipped with the original CLM diesel engine with 100 horsepower, the power of AMX38 is slightly higher than that of FCM36 (unit power is 7.4 HP/ton and FCM is 7.36 HP/ton). However, the Astor engine with 130 horsepower was used in the whole vehicle manufacturing, which made the unit power reach 9.62 horsepower/ton.
