The city was founded in 15 17, and was named after Franciscopolis I, and later renamed as "le havre-de-gr&; AcircCe), which means "Grace Port", and "le havre" means port or wharf. Le havre was built to replace the ancient ports of Hibiscus and Hibiscus which have been silted up. During the Normandy campaign, the city was severely damaged: 5,000 people died,12,500 houses were completely destroyed, and 80,000 people were homeless. After the war, Auguste Perret rebuilt its downtown and adopted a modern style. In 2005, the city of le havre rebuilt by Auguste Pellet was listed as a world cultural heritage.
