Bile acids synthesized by normal human liver include cholic acid (CA), chenodeoxycholic acid (CDCA), deoxycholic acid (DCA) produced by metabolism, and a small amount of lithocholic acid (LCA) and ursodeoxycholic acid (UDCA), which are collectively called total bile acids (TBA).
Total bile acids (TBA) are synthesized in the liver and combined with glycine or taurine to form bound bile acids, which are secreted into bile by hepatocytes and then hydrolyzed into free bile acids under the action of bacteria in the intestine, 97% of which are reabsorbed by the intestine and returned to the liver. This cycle is endless. This can make the total bile acid play the greatest physiological role. It can also prevent total bile acids from entering the circulation in large quantities and poisoning other tissues and cells.
The content of serum bile acids in peripheral blood of healthy people is very small. When hepatocytes are damaged or blocked inside and outside the liver, bile acid metabolism will be abnormal and total bile acid will increase.
Therefore, the determination of total bile acids is one of the more sensitive and effective liver function tests.
