In its latest annual report, UGS reported that Greek shipowners control 20.67% of the global transportation capacity and 54.28% of the European Union transportation capacity.
The report released on September 7th emphasized that from 2007 to 20 19, the capacity of Greek fleet more than doubled. They invested heavily in new ships and energy-saving ships, which reduced the average age of Greek fleet to 9. 17 years, which was lower than the average age of global fleet of 9.6438+0 years.
Together with Singapore, Chinese mainland, Hongkong (these countries have recently expanded their fleets) and Japan, Greece has become a world shipping power.
However, UGS said, the EU needs to help shipping companies maintain liquidity in order to continue to provide basic services during the epidemic and subsequent recovery. The impact of this epidemic is extensive and multifaceted, and has not been fully recognized.
With the outbreak of the epidemic, shipping companies, docks, ports, freight forwarders and other related industries have been seriously affected, and the ensuing financial problems have also put great pressure on shipping companies. We should take some recovery measures immediately, mainly to provide shipping companies with the necessary flexibility and liquidity so that they can effectively develop their business in practice.
"These measures should ensure that shipping companies can survive this extraordinary crisis and recover from its destructive effects after the crisis, thus ensuring their long-term sustainability."
UGS said: "Indicative measures should include extending shipping loans, suspending the contract function of installment payment within a certain period (such as 18 months), and the legal consequences of suspending the breach clause of shipping financing agreement and incorporating the loan value clause."
Theodore Veniamis, chairman of UGS, pointed out in the report: "The main challenge facing the Greek shipping industry is still to strengthen the competitiveness of Greek ships, control the outflow of ships before the situation becomes irreversible, and at the same time restore the maritime development of the Greek people."
"These two issues, namely, ship registration and employment at sea, are intertwined issues, which are the focus of shipping policies of various countries and need a comprehensive method and strategy to solve them."
In this context, he believes that the recent reform should be carried out to hire Greeks to work on ships flying the Greek flag, which will provide new strength for Greek ship registration and make our ships an attractive choice. "
