49 1 engine is based on Toyota 4Y engine.

4Y is a model of Toyota Company of Japan in 1970s, which is widely used. It has been matched with cars (Crown), light passengers (sea lions), pickup trucks (hilux) and Toyota's double-row trucks. Under this structure, it is almost impossible to change two valves into four valves. This determines the low efficiency and low power consumption of 49 1, and it is difficult to get better emission indicators.
