What is a gateway?

Gateways are also called gateways and protocol converters. Gateway realizes network interconnection above the network layer, which is a complex network interconnection device and is only used for network interconnection of two different high-level protocols. Gateway can be used for wide area network interconnection and local area network interconnection. Gateway is a computer system or equipment that plays an important role in conversion.

Used between two systems with different communication protocols, data formats or languages, or even completely different architectures, the gateway is a translator. Unlike the bridge that only transmits information, the gateway repackages the received information to meet the needs of the destination system.

Extended data:

Default gateway plays an important role in TCP network. It is usually a router, which can forward packets to other networks on the TCP network and provide default routes for TCP hosts on the network to communicate with other hosts on the remote network.

The term default gateway/default router has two meanings, and the specific meaning depends on the device function.

In both cases, "router" and "gateway" are equivalent. For IP hosts, the default router/gateway is the address of the IP router used by the host to broadcast datagrams transmitted outside the domain to the host. For IP routers, the default router/gateway is the IP address of the router to which datagrams should be forwarded when other routers are unknown, and the gateway is currently considered as an application layer protocol conversion device.
