The research materials used by Monsanto are different strains of Bacillus thuringiensis HD- 1 and HD-73 genes and commercial cotton coke 3 12, which is the first generation of Bt cotton products. Later, the second generation Bt cotton product Bollgard II was developed. Monsanto cooperates with scientists from the US Department of Agriculture and universities. Seven sites were selected in 1990, and six sites were selected in 199 1 to conduct outdoor control experiments on this transgenic cotton, which almost eliminated pests such as tobacco budworm and cotton bollworm. The test results of 1990 showed that the pest loss of Bacillus thuringiensis cotton plant was less than 1%, which was less than that of conventional plants spraying pesticides. 199 1 year is a repeated experiment. Four transgenic lines of120,000 cotton plants were tested, and the results were satisfactory.
1990 The fiber quality of HD- 1 transgenic cotton harvested from Arizona experimental field is the same as that of Jiao 3 12, but the fiber of the former is thicker than that of the latter, and the fiber length and elasticity are equivalent. Both kinds of cotton have strong fibers. Monsanto is cooperating with five seed companies to reverse cross Bacillus thuringiensis strains with the best cotton of seed companies to improve the quality of cotton fibers.
