Alcoa's China business

At present, Alcoa's most strategic investment in China is through its joint venture with Chinalco.

Since the establishment of 1993 Alcoa Asia Limited Beijing Representative Office, Alcoa has established nine wholly-owned or joint ventures in China to provide innovative solutions for customers in all major markets in China. It has bases in Shanghai, Hangzhou, Tianjin, Kunming and Qinhuangdao.

Around 2002, China Aluminum and Alcoa planned to establish a joint venture in Pingguo Aluminum Plant of China Aluminum, which is one of the most efficient alumina and electrolytic aluminum production plants in China. Alcoa believes that the proposed joint venture will help it benefit from the growth of China aluminum market, which is the fastest growing aluminum market in the world in China. China Aluminum believes that the establishment of Pingguo joint venture with Alcoa will help improve its internal operating performance. The two sides plan to greatly improve the refining and smelting capacity of Pingguo Aluminum Plant in the next few years. However, the negotiation failed and finally failed.
