Zhapu has been called "Haikou Town" since ancient times. In the fourth year of Tang Huichang (AD 844), he set up Zhapu Town Ambassador to deal with maritime affairs. In the sixth year of Chunyou in the Southern Song Dynasty (A.D. 1246), the Zhapu Bo People's Division was established, originally the Zhapu Bosi Division, and later the Tax Division. After the sea ban was lifted in the 23rd year of Kangxi in Qing Dynasty (AD 1684), Zhapu was listed as one of the fifteen ports along the southeast coast, with a "pass" and a population of 40,000 to 50,000, and was known as the "Southeast Xiongzhen". During the Opium War, Jiaxing Port (Zhapu Port) was devastated and almost in ruins. With the rise of Shanghai Port, Jiaxing Port has gradually become a forgotten corner, but there are still 50-300-ton ships berthing at the original pier. 19 17, the great revolutionary pioneer Dr. Sun Yat-sen proposed to open an "oriental port" in Zhapu area in his "General Plan for the Founding of the People's Republic of China". Jiaxing Port, as a national first-class open port, is located in the south wing of the Yangtze River Delta, the north bank of Hangzhou Bay, the coast of the East China Sea, and adjacent to Shanghai Pudong New Area in the east. It is the pioneer area for Jiaxing to implement the cross-century development strategy, the only seaport and main channel for foreign trade in Hangjiahu area in northern Zhejiang, and an important port in the Yangtze River Delta region.

The business scope includes services such as loading and unloading, warehousing, stockpiling and transportation of containers, groceries, bulk cargoes and liquid chemical products.
In 2004, the first and second public wharves of Jiaxing Port completed the cargo throughput of 36,543,800 tons and the loading and unloading containers of 65,438,800 TEUs.
