What does JR mean in Japanese?

JR, or Japan Railway, is a large Japanese railway company group. Its predecessor is Japan's state-owned railway (hereinafter referred to as "national railway", commonly known as "JNR").

1987, Japan Railway was divided into seven companies, and the original state-owned management right was transferred to private enterprises (privatization of China Railway). The separated companies were collectively called "Japan Railway Company". Japan Railway Company is sometimes translated into Japan Passenger Railway, but there are also freight railway companies in Japan Railway Company. When it is emphasized as a whole, it will also be called JRグループ.

Extended data:

1987 1 In April, according to the National Railway Reform Law passed by the Japanese Parliament, Japan's state-owned railways were divided into seven independent special legal persons, including six railway passenger companies and 1 railway freight companies. Japan State-owned Railway Clearing Corporation (dissolved in 1998), a special legal person originally established according to the same law, still retains all the shares of seven companies, gradually liberalized its shares, and each company went public step by step, thus achieving the goal of privatization.

JR's four passenger railway companies (JR East Japan, JR East China Sea, JR West Japan and JR Kyushu) have achieved the goal of full privatization due to their good operating conditions, while other companies still need state subsidies, and the Japanese government still holds all or most of the shares.
