Was Beijing Zoo changed into Xijiao Park in the early days of the People's Republic of China?

1 February, 949, after the Beijing Municipal People's Government took over the Beijing Zoo, considering that the conditions of the agricultural experimental field were no longer suitable for mulberry breeding experiments, it was renovated, transformed and afforested, and was named "Xijiao Park" on September1day of the same year.

1 950 March1day, Xijiao Park officially opened. In order to prepare for the opening of Xijiao Park, Xijiao Park Management Office will repair the fence, peony pavilion, hurricane hall and zoo animal hall in the park. The bird cage, deer shed, Monkey Mountain and Yonglu were renovated, some small animals were added, and birds such as yellowbird, bouquet, golden wing, peaceful bird, sparrow, turkey, eagle, crane and goose, deer, wolf, mouse and leopard were purchased. National leaders also donated precious animals such as Asian elephant, lynx, gibbon, black bear, big-eared sheep, elk and Indian rhinoceros to the zoo for breeding and exhibition. 1952 gave the horses "Juqing", "Red Mule" and "Tieqing Horse" ridden by state leaders in the war years to the zoo for breeding and exhibition, and transferred the historical materials of the three horses to the zoo for exhibition and publicity.

1951May, Secretary-General Xue Zizheng of Beijing Municipal People's Government instructed the work of the park: Xijiao Park has broad prospects and will be built into a large zoo. If there is an opportunity, you can send people to the Soviet Union and various democratic countries in Eastern Europe to study and expand the Capital Zoo. 1952165438+1October 5th, Xijiao Park sent a five-member delegation headed by the director of Xijiao Park for the first time to visit and study the zoo in the Soviet Union, Poland and Eastern European countries, which lasted for three months. At the same time, more than 30 kinds of animals such as South China tiger, leopard, brown bear, macaque, python, golden rooster, silver chicken and parrot were brought in for exchange, thus establishing an international animal exchange relationship. 1In February, 953, the Central Zoology Department of the Soviet Union and the Leipzig Zoo of the German Democratic Republic visited the park for the first time, with a total of 48 animals of more than 10. Among them, white bear, white fox, puma, spotted dog and yellow vulture are all rare animals raised and exhibited in China for the first time. After that, he had extensive animal exchanges with Poland, Czechoslovakia, Hungary, Romania and other eastern European countries, as well as North Korea, Vietnam and other countries. Later, it established international animal exchange relations with Japan, Myanmar, India, Indonesia and other countries.

Animal breeding and management are gradually developing in a scientific and systematic direction through investigation, exploration and learning from foreign advanced experience. In the early 1950s, a teacher from the Department of Veterinary Medicine of Beijing Agricultural University was hired as a veterinary consultant, and later Huang, a veterinarian studying in the United States, was hired as a consultant. 195 1 year later, 15 college students from Peking University, Beijing Agricultural University, Sun Yat-sen University and Sichuan University came to the park to conduct preliminary scientific experiments and explorations on wildlife feed and feeding management. 1In June, 954, with the approval of Beijing Municipal Government, the municipal garden department invited the director and veterinarian of Moscow Zoo in the Soviet Union to give lectures in the park and held a 33-day training course on animal management. There are 14 participants in the park. From April 65438 to April 0956, a scientific research working group was set up in the park, focusing on the breeding of rare animals such as giant pandas, golden monkeys, black swans and red-crowned cranes.

With the development of animal species and quantity, the infrastructure construction of zoos has also developed rapidly. Since 1950, the facilities of the old zoo have been transformed, and 1952 has been changed into a small zoo. In addition, 23 buildings (including one reconstruction) including elephant house, lion house, black bear mountain, monkey house, raptor bar, waterfowl lake, songbird house, grassland dwellers' garden, lion tiger mountain, hippopotamus house, rhinoceros house, panda house and giraffe house have been built one after another. The zoo has a total construction area of about 7,000 square meters, a playground area of more than 40,000 square meters, and an investment of more than 3 million yuan. Gradually expand the zoo from the eastern part of the park to the central and western parts of the park. In addition to building animal houses, the old houses will be used to rebuild feed houses and veterinary houses, and at the same time, roads in the park will be maintained, water supply and power supply will be increased, and new sewage facilities will be built. 1952, Beijing Exhibition Hall was completed, covering an area of about 1 1 hectare on the east side of Xijiao Park.

After 1953, the number of animals exchanged from abroad and collected in China increased sharply. In order to prevent animal diseases, it is necessary to quarantine the newly introduced animals. Approved by the Municipal Bureau of Landscape Architecture, Dashichang in the western suburbs (south exit of Baishiqiao Road) was transformed into an animal farm in the western suburbs park.
