Shale gas drilling and production technology of Schlumberger company

I. Summary of contents

More than ten years ago, Schlumberger engineers proved the great application potential of horizontal well drilling technology in shale gas development. Shale gas well drilling technology is not difficult, but completion technology and fracturing technology are more difficult. Therefore, the rapid progress of shale horizontal well development technology is mainly attributed to the development of completion technology and fracturing technology.

Schlumberger tried a new technology to reconsider the direction of cracks. Different from most shale gas wells, this technology chooses to increase the pressure in a specific fracturing direction and make the fracture develop at right angles to the borehole. At the same time, Schlumberger also overcame the problem of poor fracture permeability and developed a pumping fluid injection method to delay the proppant time. Clean FRACturing (clean FRAC, figure 1) and fiber fracturing (fiber frac, figure 2) are such technologies.

Second, the scope of application and application examples

At present, there are few special exploitation technologies for shale gas, and Schlumberger is the pioneer in this field. It is the successful application of these advanced technologies that has promoted the rapid development of shale gas development in the United States. Barnett shale District has only four horizontal wells in 1999, but by the end of 2004, it has increased to 744 horizontal wells.
