Located in Wumeng Mountain in western Guizhou, at the junction of Yunnan and Guizhou provinces, on the upper reaches of the Yangtze River and Pearl River, on both sides of Nanpanjiang River and Beipanjiang River Basin, it is one of the important railway hub cities and logistics distribution centers in southwest China. Liupanshui has a cool, comfortable, humid and fresh climate with moderate ultraviolet radiation. Awarded the title of "Du Liang, China" by China Meteorological Society, China is a city named after its climate characteristics. Liupanshui has a long history and was a territorial country in the Spring and Autumn Period. During the Warring States period, the city was the territory of Yelang State. After the Qin Dynasty unified China, it belonged to Hanyang County and Ba County.

The urban boundary structure belongs to the Yangtze platform fold belt on the Yangtze paraplatform. Located on the Yangtze paraplatform (1 class structure), the Weining-Shuicheng fold fault bundle, the southwest Guizhou fold fault bundle, the early middle Guizhou ancient arch fold fault bundle and the far western edge of the south Guizhou fold fault bundle in the Yangtze platform fold belt (class II structure). The terrain is high in the northwest and low in the southeast, and the central part is severely cut and eroded by Beipanjiang River.

The highest point on the ground in China is Jiucaiping, Dawan Town, Zhongshan District, with an altitude of 2900.3 meters, which is also the highest point in Guizhou Province.
